Stew
Stemming from the second generation of Parisian graffiti artists, Stew has no doubt
retained the pleasure of the immediate, on-the-spot, creation along with the sheer
confidence and power of the spray. The whole experience now blossoming out into waves
of joyful and hypnotic colours.
Choice of his inner world occurred years ago when Japanese imagery(ou Japanese
imagery?) took hold of him, reaching deep into the folds of his dream images. Hence,
kabuki masks, eager lovers and mysterious warriors soon found their way into his collages,
frescoes and paintings, dragons and samourai acting as the distant calling of faraway
fantasies. One recurring character, Jizo, protective creature and temple guardian, plays the
key part of the watchful talisman in Stew’s universe.
Stew has yet to travel to the real Japan. He patiently bides his time, fully aware that
essential encounters cannot be decreed but have to allow for their own internal pace.
